Cataracts

lens cataract

Cataracts are a common eye condition that affects the clarity of the lens inside your eye, leading to blurry vision. The lens, which is normally clear, becomes cloudy over time, causing vision problems.

Cataracts often develop as a result of aging, but they can also be caused by factors such as:

    • Exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun
    • Smoking
    • Diabetes
    • Certain medications (i.e. corticosteroids)
    • Eye injuries or inflammation

The symptoms of cataracts can vary but may include:

    • Blurry or cloudy vision
    • Difficulty seeing at night
    • Sensitivity to light
    • Seeing halos around lights
    • Colors appearing faded or yellowed

While it's not possible to prevent age related cataracts, there are steps you can take to slow the development and progression, such as:

    • Wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays
    • Quitting smoking
    • Managing underlying health conditions like diabetes

In the early stages, cataracts may not require treatment other than regular monitoring by an eye doctor and changing your glasses prescription. However, as they progress and begin to interfere with daily activities, surgery may be recommended. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens.

Cataracts are a common eye condition that can be effectively treated, allowing you to regain clear vision and improve your quality of life. If you're experiencing vision changes, it's important to see an eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
